An Internet-Draft from the IETF Network Management Research Group specifies NetConfBench, a framework for evaluating intent-driven network configuration by LLM-based agents. It combines an emulator-based interactive environment, a suite of representative tasks, and two-layer metrics: outcome metrics that verify functional correctness in a method-agnostic way, plus agentic process metrics assessing reasoning quality and command generation, with optional efficiency metrics for time and token cost.
Because ground-truth configurations may admit more than one validated solution, functional test cases are the primary metric, with command and reasoning scores as diagnostic estimates. The goal is reproducible, fair comparison across both agentic and non-agentic approaches while highlighting what is specific to autonomous agents — a useful step toward benchmarking LLM agents doing real network configuration work.
